Not a Quicken alternative

I was looking for a good alternative to Quicken for Windows. I did some research and apparently Quicken for Mac 2015 is really, really bad, so I didn’t buy it. I was looking for an alternative that is better rated and this was in a review I read as a good one. If you are starting from scratch with no data imports and just a few accounts, it may be a good alternative for you. However the import process from QIF (quicken) is poor, and the balances don’t match in Ifinance from quicken. That alone renders this useless to me. I’m not going to redo/reconcile/research all my transactions to see why it isn’t right in a brand new application. This is a fail unless starting anew with no import. I never got that far so it may or may not be ok at that point.

I bought this app some time ago to replace Microsoft Money. This program has proven to be quite glitchy for me. Some specific problems:

- likes to duplicate your recurring entries. There is no rhyme or reason to this occuring either, it will just randomly throw duplicate entries onto your ledger, leaving you to try to figure out where the problem is when things don’t line up.
- using it in conjunction with the mobile app should theoretically be great, but it isn’t. Same problem with duplicate entries and the inability to properly sync.

I’m displeased enough with this app that I’m searching for a new one to try.

Useful but Quirky

Here’s what you need to know (as of Jan 2015):

1. Online banking doesn’t appear to work for US banks. Manual entry required.
2. Asset, Liability and Equity accounts are known as “accounts”. Income/Expense accounts are known as “categories".
3. Use the Profit and Loss functions for nearly everything. The Income and Expense functions do not track contra-entries!! Example: You buy something, and return it later. Debit the expense category (purchase), and then credit the expense category (return). Thus, the opposite credit/debit entries match the bank statement. However, the expense/income functions only show entries for the normal balance (debit for expenses, credit for income). That’s why none of the standard income/expense reports match .qif import data. It’s frustrating at first, but once you realize that the profit and loss functions do track contra entries, you’re good to go.
4. Reconciliation is a bit confusing at first, but pretty easy once you figure it out. Just highlight all matching entries, and then batch reconcile.

The quirks are easily worth -2 stars, but here’s the thing. Since iFinance doesn’t really allow you to drill down on summary information, you build most of the information display system yourself by adding budgets, reports and charts (using the profit and loss functions). For instance, I run my P&L summary report through the budget tab by setting the P&L budget to track all categories and setting losses must not exceed $0 per year. If the balance is negative, the budget is red. If the balance if positive, the budget is green. Plus, the budget graphic displays the balance as well. Very easy to see in the left tab on the home screen. I don’t even need to click on the P&L report to see the profit or loss, unless I want detailed category information.

Customization is +1 star. After a while, setting-up the program is fun, and it’s interesting to think that everyone has a different configuration. I wonder if anyone else has found better shortcuts or built a better shorthand information display in the budget tab.
